Clients tend to start by trying to develop standard approaches for care following joint replacement procedures, for which there is tremendous variation in post-acute use.

At one hospital, for example, one surgeon sent 70 percent of his patients to an inpatient rehab facility, while another sent most patients directly home, with similar outcomes and a sixfold difference in price, says Carter Paine, naviHealth’s chief operating officer.
